Theory of Knowledge (TOK)A two-year course1,600-word essay (prescribed title) + exhibition (3 objects + commentary)0–3 bonus points, together with the EECompulsory for every IBDP student.
Extended Essay (EE)A 4,000-word research project spread across the yearAn independent research essay in a chosen IB subject0–3 bonus points, together with TOKFrom May 2027 the World Studies EE is replaced by an interdisciplinary pathway that combines two DP subjects. Candidates sitting in November 2026 can still take a World Studies EE.
CAS (Creativity, Activity, Service)———Not graded; an experiential learning component that must be completed to earn the diploma.

IB Scoring (max 45)

The IBDP total is the sum of the 1–7 grades from each of the six subjects (max 42) plus 0–3 bonus points from TOK and the EE (max 45). University entry thresholds vary by institution and programme, and many universities also set minimum grades in specific HL subjects.

  • 7
Excellent — the IBDP's top grade band, defined by the subject grade descriptors the IB publishes.
  • 6
Very good — the grade band many selective universities ask for at HL.
  • 5
Good — a common university entry threshold.
  • 4
Satisfactory — basic competence; some universities require a minimum of 4 at HL/SL.
  • 3
Mediocre — acceptable for the diploma but limiting for competitive applications.
  • 2
Poor — weak performance in the subject.
  • 1
Very poor — puts the diploma requirements at risk.
